Y-Con 2008 Report!

Summer bugged me to write my con report and even though I'm feeling sort of sleepy and lazy, I will.

Friday

I flew in on Friday. Deani and Summer had rented a car and the plan was to pick me up, but I actually got there early and they hadn't even left yet. I managed to catch the con shuttle and arrived at the hotel the same time that they did. We went to eat lunch and when we got back, we pretty much tossed our stuff in our room and all went down to work at Registration.

I had the misfortune of being stuck next to those fangirls. You know, the ones that give everyone a bad name? One was an attention whore that was having fun flashing her skin and squealing at pretty people. The other was also a squealer and collaborated with the first one. It was really annoying. And someone kept passing gas, so it was annoying and smelly and I wanted to die. I bashed my head on the table in frustration once and actually got a metal ring from the binder in front of me jabbed into the corner of my eye. It didn't bruise, but it did swell and looked like a bug bite. It also hurt. Ugh. So not cool.

After a few hours of that nonsense, I was more than happy to run off to grab the stuff I wanted to sell at the swap meet. Of course, when I got there, all the spaces were sold out. Pixelgoddess told me that I could split her space, but as it turned out table space was only a third of a table. By some weird luck, the spot next to Pixel was open and unsold and the person she was sharing the table with offered to half it with us, so I gave them $5 and got a half of a third of a table. ^_^;; Yeah. We were in the sun though and it was hot. It seemed like people just didn't want to buy anything. I mean, most of the manga I was selling were yaoi titles. I find that the genre is very faddish though. It seems that if the title is a little older, people just aren't interested in it any more. They only want the new things. In the end, I was really just giving things away ridiculously cheap just to get rid of them! I didn't buy anything there either. I either had most of the manga on sale or simply wasn't interested. I'm trying to keep my manga purchases down to a bare minimum. So, I got to hang around with Pixelgoddess and Ginia for the swap meet, but it was sort of disappointing over all.

From there, I headed back to the room to swap out my stuff for all the stuff I'd gotten for the y!galley meet-up. I headed down to the pool area and dumped everything by a table. Another table flagged me over because they were there for the meet up. We got a bunch of tables together and more people arrived and we had our big roll of paper that acted as a tablecloth/doodle page. We had a large variety of fruits and veggies and stuff...we had a rabbit buffet pretty much! That's always the problem with a potluck style meal, it's pretty random. I ended up putting cheetos on the salad that I brought. It was interesting.

We had quite a few people there. I was happy with how many showed up. It wasn't as many who said they'd show up (it never seems to be) but it was a lot and they were awesome. We doodled and talked and ate and were silly. And being y!gallery, some penises were drawn. Now, recently, Oprah did not so intelligent thing. She read a message from some 4chan troll on her show about over 9,000 penises. Just listen to her say it with all seriousness! Well, it's all 4chan/anonymous catch phrases! We do not forgive, we do not forget is the Anonymous slogan. Over 9,000 is the DBZ spawned meme. It's ridiculous! I was telling people about this and said that we should try to collect over 9,000 penises! So we started drawing. It was funny. Yeah, I sound like a sicko, but who cares? Penises are funny.

We broke up around 8 because it was getting cold. I brought my stuff back to the room and then I had nothing to do. I went out to see if anyone was lingering in the pool area, but it was nobody that I recognized and there was nobody in the lobby either. I ended up going back to registration and taking over for Summer for an hour. Of course, while I was there, I watched the y!gallery people reconvene but by then I was stuck and I couldn't go out to join them =/ So I just sat at Registration and registered a few stragglers. I don't like at-con registration because the laptops that we use have really squished keyboards and I type like crap on them. I just feel slow and it's not fun to be slow and keep messing up on your typing. And then I was the only computer open, so I had this rush of people right before we closed. Ugh, that always seems to happen. It doesn't matter that we were open for 8 hours that day, people still came up after we were closed, wanting to register. Pre-Reg people! It's awesome! Or at least show up on time.

Anyway, I headed up to the room after that and nothing terribly exciting happened there. Just some sleeping.

Saturday

We all got up early to shower on Saturday, because showering at cons is a good thing. I don't understand why some other con-goers don't understand this. Yes, we give you a wristband to wear, but it is plastic and water-proof! I always encourage people to shower with them on when I snap them on their wrists. This seems not to sink in as there are still some people wandering around with an awful con funk. Hell, there were people with a con funk on Friday even. There's no excuse to smell on the first day of a convention! You just got there! You should be clean! Urgh! I put my It's Not Love, But It's a Blast shirt, that Dae designed for me on and poured on the perfume. I feel like I'm overcompensating for some other stinky people there -_-

Anyway, I went and lined up for the dealer's room first. I'm not really sure why. The initial rush in there with people mobbing the tables is pretty crazy. The first few times I walked around, I didn't get near any of the tables really. I did see the Nekojin Design girls, who I know from my old DBZ days. A lot of the people I seem to know or meet at the con seems to be from those times. Summer and Deani are from back then. Pixelgoddess and Ginia are also from back then. It's so weird that I'm not in the fandom anymore and I'm still surrounded in so many ways.

Moving along, I did end up getting Incubus 3 and Crimson Spell 2. They were on my list of books to acquire. I also got a copy of Yamato Nase's pet on Duty and got a free poster as well. I went to the doujin room and fought the massive mob to get to the FMA box. I got a few FMA doujin and then I struggled upstream to the Gurren Lagann box and picked up a few from there. I weeded out a lot of stuff. I wanted it, but the thing about doujin is that the covers look nice and the content is disappointing. So I went for stuff that I knew I'd like. I found three doujin by doujinka that I enjoy and got those. Then I just picked out some that fascinated me, like the Olivia Armstrong/Roy Mustang "Yaoi" title.

The line to purchase the doujinshi was also really long so I had to hurry to the Yamato Nase panel. Luckily, I got in right before they started and got on the fourth row. The panel started out as a Q&A and then moved into a sort of show and tell of the prints and things she'd brought. People were constantly snapping pictures and it was sort of annoying. Do you really need all those pictures? Why? We know that quite a few mangaka are quite shy and averse to having their pictures splashed all over the internet and yet there people are snapping away, like she was doing something...which she was just sitting there either answering questions or drawing and then later showing things on the projector. Whatever. She had a cute personality and I enjoyed listening to her answers. For the show and tell part she'd brought a lot of her original sketches and illustrations to show us. She showed us the rough copies for manga including something called a "name" where they pretty much set up the manga and sketch where the characters will be and stuff it was interesting.

Then we did the autograph session, but we did it by rows. The lame thing about that was that people were coming in late, after the panel was over and pretty much cutting the line by heading to rows in the front instead of sitting in the back and nobody said anything about it. Some people came and sat beside me and in the end, they turned out to be the cut off point for that autograph session which was really lame. They weren't waiting all that time and yet they got an autograph when others had to wait for the next session. That definitely needs a little work. I got my copy of Pet on Duty signed and I got to look up close at the sketches and illustrations.

I got a call and I had to go help someone straighten out their pre-reg troubles and I got to flaunt my barely existent connections XD I really did nothing special other than point in a direction and say "They can help." I went to the fan market and bugged Jojo and ended up going off to get her and Tomoe lunch. It was nice to have the car so I could zip off down the street and get it....only I forgot the card required to get back into the parking lot and had to call Summer to bring it down to me ^_^;;

I hung out with Summer while I ate my yummy mushroom burger. Mmmm. After that, I had nothing to do so I went off and ended up volunteering at the info booth in front of Registration. But it was kind of boring and I was getting a headache, so I called Summer and asked if she'd bring me a book and a pepsi. She did ♥ and she ended up staying with me and keeping me company. Yay! We got to horrify people with tales of the bad ebooks she reads about weredolphins and Nazi shape-shifting gay unicorns! Fun times! But I still had a headache, so we went back to the room and I passed out x_x

I felt better when I woke up and went to the manga library. I found Twistedhilarity and JessJess from the y!gallery meet-up with the 9,000 penis project there XD I also met someone who fangirled all over my shirt. I always have people compliment me on the shirt and wanting to read it. I love the shirt Dae! I got to tell people you were taking commissions too, like the person who was fangirling it in the library. We ended up talking about fma for a bit and trading contact info before she went off to draw some penises.

I read a few manga and chatted with TH and Jess Jess until the library closed and then we went into the hall to get more people to draw penises. We dragged it down to a table in front of the main ballroom and got a lot of people as the came out of the bishounen auction. I know the Bishounen Auction is like THE event for some people and I've been to it before, but I'm really not too big on the bishounen. I know a lot of people learn their names and all that but it's just not my thing, so I've started to skip it. I'm there for the yaoi and meeting people and stuff, not oogling and objectifying real men. I feel like I'm one of those dorks who's only into 2-D men. It isn't true of course, but I feel that way.

Either way, we got more people to draw on the paper. I made a cactus penis complete with little pink cactus flowers XD After the people left from the auction, people started lining up for the dance. We had some stupid drunk bitch that put a bunch of stupid stuff on the paper and poked holes in it and even drew on someone else's art. We had to pick up all the pencils and crayons and stuff so she couldn't keep messing stuff up. Someone danced for us. I shall call it the Rubik's cube dance, because basically, she was miming using a Rubik's cube. It was interesting. But just looking at the crowd, I think it was less of a dance and more of a Rave. I guess dancing took place in some form, but...yeah. We packed up the paper after that and parted ways.

I couldn't sleep when I got back to the room. Summer was already sleeping, but I stayed up and read some of my doujin. Deani walked in just when I got into bed. Turns out that she'd bought a bishounen at the auction on accident. She was trying to boost prices and instead got stuck with a bishie when someone retracted. I didn't get to see him though =/ Meanie Deani!

Sunday

On Sunday, I got up and puttered around and packed and helped to bring everything out to pack into the car. I went down to volunteer at Registration again. There was a whole little family of volunteers down there, two sisters and a brother along with the Registration staff. We talked about all sorts of stuff and it was fun. One of them got a hold of a copy of an ebook in actual print form (what a waste of trees!) And we were reading part of it and laughing. ebooks are so horrible. Summer collects them to laugh at. I mean, come on! Weredolphins! Gay Nazi shapeshifting unicorns! Sooooo baaaaaad!

Then I ran off to sit in on the Internalized Mysogeny and Yaoi Panel aka the "Why do we hate vagina?" panel. It was good and bad. It was good because some good points were made. It was bad because some people were allowed to speak that shouldn't have opened their mouths. It wasn't even really for bad opinions or anything, it was simply lack of anything of substance to say! If you don't have a point, shut up! If you just want to tell us that you wrote a fic....we don't care! It was an interesting topic and I'll definitely talk about it later.

I met up with Summer again and I had to decide between going to the fandom wank panel and food. I opted for food. I wanted to go to the fandom wank panel since it amuses me so much, but we were already bashing Twilight and talking about wank at Registration, so in a way I was already there XD But yes, food was more important. Summer and I went off to the greasy spoon for our last meal there. When we got back, we went around the dealer's room again. I kept torturing myself by walking around the dealer's room looking at all the things I could possibly buy and was trying to resist. And still, I kept walking around and around and doing it! I don't know why. I made Summer drag me out....but she dragged me back in again.

Summer and I turned in our volunteer cards and got our goodie bags. I got some smelly Happy Bunny shampoo and a Death Note bobble head and some other bits and bobs. Summer got a book she says is the size of a bible.

We made one last stop in the Dealer's Room 15 minutes before it closed. We stopped at the Nekojin Designs stall to say hi/bye and TH, JessJess, Pixel were there. And JessJess suddenly revealed that she'd known me from DBZ fandom, which I was surprised at. But then Summer and Deani are always teasing me about my BNFness. Yeah, well, you guys too, because when I mentioned that SummerStarr was with me, Summer got a big old hug. So ha ha guys =P

Summer wandered around with Pixel and I made a super last minute purchase of two Fumi Yoshinaga manga for $5 each. I sort of wish I'd looked through the table more, but it's good because I didn't buy more. I have five manga and that's enough. After we finished shopping, we went to sit in the lobby to wait for Deani, who had been saying goodbye to people since before we went to lunch. I found a plastic gun that someone had left behind and as we waited and waited and waited and waited and WAITED, I used it to shoot myself many times. I was so tired and falling asleep. Ugh.

Finally, we went to drag Deani down and we left. And thus, the con came to an end. I had fun. I got to meet a lot of cool people and buy stuff and have fun. There's more, but honestly, I am so tired at this point that I'm forgetting stuff. I doubt that anyone wants to listen to me ramble anymore about my angst ridden wanderings through the fanmarket. Basically, I was angsting over not buying things and supporting the fans, but I knew if I bought prints I'd do nothing with them and I would love to commission, but can never think of what I'd commission and thus, I angsted. *sighs* But now, I sleep. I hope I don't drown in cat hair x_x

For FMA, I got mostly Havoc and Roy. I didn't see any Archer =/ And for Gurren Lagann, I got a doujin with Simon microbes! =D There's also some shota Simon and a Simon/Rossiu ^_^ You'll have to wait for pictures and scans when I get back home though.

I hope you have fun at your cons! I think for one year there was a yaoi/yuri con in Germany, but I haven't heard of it since. You'll just have to come to our Yaoi-con! Save up! Fly over! I'll take you around ^___^

Ok <3<3 I'm really interested in some Rossiu/Simon luvin' <3 I wonder if I'll be able to find some doujin... At conventions there is this yaoi shop that has lots but it's so expensive it hurts...

I don't think that I'll never come to the USA :D I just realized that I'd need a PASSPORT to do so XD !

Dae: *looking at people boarding* --But... Do you need a passport to go in the USA?
Co-worker: Of course ò_o
