What I've Been Watching

I've been watching a looooooooooooot of anime lately. I haven't always been announcing what I'm watching. It just feels like I should be keeping track of it somehow. Especially if I ever want to discuss it with anyone! So hey, lemme tell you what I've been watching.
Everyone already knows that I watched and LOVED Toppa Tengen Gurren Lagann. It's not a perfect anime, but there's a lot there for me to like. Total fangirl, nuff said.
I also watched Claymore. I enjoyed it. Plenty of monster slaying and blood to be had in a series about hybrid chicks swinging big swords at monsters. I did have trouble telling all the girls apart though...C'mon! They're ALL BLOND! And they all had the same eyecolor and the same clothes. Very confusing for me quite often. Regardless, it was a nice ride. Unfortunately it was one of those anime that overtakes the manga so the ending wasn't really the ending. I've heard people complain, but I'd rather they leave it at that than pull a FMA and make a different fucking canon! No, I am not bitter at the FMA anime, what are you talking about?!!?!
Moving along, I watched a whole crapload of Yakitate Japan. It's an anime about bread! It makes me hungry. Sure it's your standard shounen format of boy has talent, boy's talent steadily grows, etc, whatever, but it's quirky. It's about bread! It's cute and has a lot of crazy characters and the "bread reactions" are just too funny. So yeah, Yakitate Japan, an anime about bread, very cute, though it did get old after the zillionth bread battle. Someday I'll pick it up again.
Don't laugh, but I watched Peach Girl. It got pretty silly, like in the part where Momo thought she was raped -_- That was just dumb. But typical high school crushes and angst and bullying. Bullying stories always infuriated me, but hey what can you do. She ended up with the better of the two guys I think! Sure, they were both nice, but I liked her final choice the best, even if she did guy hop like woah. A decent story for a shoujo, though there's other that I prefer like Mars or Hanakimi.
I watched both seasons of Rozen Maiden. The dolls were pretty cute. I wish that Souseiseki had been a boy! They made her into the little gentleman but the made her a girl! I know they were fighting to be "Alice" and all but dammit, I think she would have made a better boy, but whatever. It was cute. It was like a harem anime that can't be a harem because they're dolls. Plus it was sort of a fighting anime, but then they had the wacky high jinx episodes. In the end, I found the plot to be wanting. I understand that there's an OVA out there somewhere that I must see but I don't think it'll tie together everything I need it to.
Beck was an awesome anime. I actually watched the dubs. Hey, they were the only thing available for me to illegally watch! So yeah, I watched the dubs and I still liked it. It felt real. Again, the bullying got to me, but it was such a nice tail of growing up and friends and music. And speaking of music, afterwards I went in search of the Japanese versions of the songs....the Engrish! Soooooooo bad! The one time I went looking for discussion on Beck people were baying like morons over the music and how the Japanese is better....well they're just morons. The dub has superior music, mainly because it has a natural grasp of English! I can't take that Engrish crap seriously. And yes, they did replace the Beetles song at the end, but that's because of copyright infringement people. I also felt that the song they replaced it with was pretty catchy. I'm totally buying the dub soundtrack! Watch Beck! It's fun ^_^
Mononoke was very very weird. The anime is textured, bright, highly stylized, full of traditional Japanese symbolism and folklore and very very weird. It's like The Adolescence of Utena (random odd imagery, camera angles, symbolism and general weirdness) and Gankutsuo's (bright colors and patterns of eyeburny levels) bastard love child with your standard excorcism plot thrown in. I watched it all and the episodes that include the Medicine Seller from Ayakashi. I watched them all and I really can't say that I like it, nor did I hate it. It's just confusing in a way. I'm pretty much baffled by it and therefore recommend it only so see how far it will bend your brain.
After being teased by my otaku cousins and their otaku friend about not being able to get past the finger breaking scene in the beginning of Darker Than Black, I revisited the series and watched the whole thing. It's interesting. The plot is convoluted and full of holes. So much is never answered, but I liked the main character and the cat XD It was just interesting enough to keep me watching, but as I said, no answers to so many questions. It could have done better.
I'm in the process of watching Black Lagoon. It's pretty much a shoot 'em up with a few spots of sentimentality and a whole lot of action, explosions, bullets and blood. The gun woman reminds me a lot of Yoko from Toppa Tengen Gurren Lagann. They're both redheads who like guns and skimpy clothes, though Revy wears more than Yoko. It follows a group of transporters through various missions. There's a "Church of Violence" full of nuns with guns. There's a maid who's probably the Terminator's younger sister. There's psychotic incestuous loligoth vampire twins from Romania who like to hack people up and roll around in their blood. Oh yeah, and there's Nazis...don't worry though, they don't last for long XD What is there not to love?
As for current things. I already wrote about Gundam 00 but I also started watching Hero Tales, the latest series from Hiromu Arakawa aka the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist. The thing about a new series from someone you know is that, hey! People look the same. The badguy is a beefed up version of King Bradley. There's a character in the opening, yet to be introduced, that looks like Archer with long hair! I want to see him!! XD Anyway, even when they don't look exactly like another character, the style kinda throws me off. The story? Quest anime. It's going to be a quest anime where they gain allies along the way. Whether we get a new twist to keep our interest or not, well, we'll see.
I'm sure there's probably something that I've forgotten since I have a mind like a sieve, but that's it for now. Feel free to strike up discussion on something. Heck, I'd love to know what you make of Mononoke ^_^;; Or even Darker than Black. So many holes to discuss. But not now. Now I'm gonna bellyflop on Niku. Banzai!
EDIT: As predicted, I forgot to mention some stuff. I'll just add it it ^_^;;
Seto no Hanayome is about mermaid Yakuza! It starts out semi-serious, heads straight for ridiculous and stays there until the last two episodes! Then it gets serious and angsty! I feel they were wasting their time with al the humor, they should have balanced it out better. Whatever, it was still quite funny ^_^
What's more ridiculous than an anime about bread? How about an anime about microbes? Yep, Tales of Agriculture is about just that. It's about a guy who can see bacteria without the aid of a microscope. They're pretty much little chibis of their true bacteria forms and he can touch them and interact with them and talk to them! He's going to an Agricultural college and gets roped up by a fermentation fanatic professor and it all gets whacky from there.
There, now I think I've remembered everything!
