More Spring Anime

I've watched two new ones and a few second episodes of others.
Kyouran Kazoku Nikki
This is one of those "endearing asshole" pieces that I hate. You have someone who is overbearing, selfish, and an all around asshole and you're supposed to warm up to them. I HATE that. The bitchy character is drawn cute and small and that's supposed to make you like them but all the funny parts just aren't. You feel so bad for the guy that got roped into being stuck with her that it makes it impossible to like her. Ugh. It's like the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya all over again with a catgirl, an android, a lion, an electric jellyfish, and a flaming gay boy. Do not want. I didn't want it the first time around and I certainly don't want it repackaged.
The Tower of Druaga
This takes every shounen anime theme and cheeses it up a million times and throws it in your face going "Look how ridiculous this is! I can't believe you like stuff like this!" It's funny, but a little too over the top. I know you're supposed to laugh but I simply groaned at many parts. A little more subtlety might have made it funnier. And then after this super whacked out intro to the anime....the main character wakes up. It looks like the anime might be far more serious than it's first episode...but somehow I doubt that. Not sure what to expect next here, but I'll watch the next episode to see.
Nabari no Ou 2
This episode is lighter on the ninja action, but more open with the plot. It introduces a female character who insists that she's not a ninja but a samurai. We get to witness Miharu using his cuteness against men again. It's really quite funny. This episode was definitely slower paced than the first but that's ok. We get to learn a bit more about the characters and what's going on and the next episode promises us more action and and introduction to some new baddies. Still on board with this one. ^_^
Special A 2
Episode 2 has annoyed me. But lemme backtrack for a moment for a better description of things. The main character is Hikari. She's been training in pro wrestling since she was little and was always really good at it. Then Kei came along and was better than her and ever since she's been his second fiddle. They go to a school where the top 7 students are separated from the rest of the school and made to wear a different uniform and take classes in a seperate building that is pretty much a giant green house with fancy furniture where they sit around and have lunch. The other students either fangirl them or are annoyed by their perceived arrogance so there's this Ouran Host Club vibe. Kei is the top student and she is the second and he delights in calling her Miss Second Place.
In this episode, the Student Council President appears and wants to get revenge for a perceived slight so he challenges the Special A class. They end up setting up a wrestling match, which Hikari is gung ho about and Kei will be her tag team partner. Once the Student Council Pres sees them training though, he realizes that his pro wrestlers will never be able to win so they try to sabotage things by throwing flower pots out of windows and greasing the stairs to hurt Hikari and Kei. Hikari avoids it all a bit cluelessly. Kei on the other hand freaks out because he doesn't want Hikari hurt since he has a massive crush on her and all. Rather than acknowledging her strength, he's like "Oh noes! Must protect!" Newsflash jerkface! You do more harm to her than any flowerpot ever will. Anyway, he tries to get her to switch out with one of the other Special A boys and she refuses. So then he tells her that she's just a burden to him. Ouch.
On the day of the fight, he tells her that he'll go first, but she calls him on it, knowing that he won't tag her. Then the Student Council President has them handcuffed together and she's excited that he'll have to let her fight. Instead, he keeps using the cuffs to drag her out of the way and protect her and getting beaten in the process. He picks her up and puts her out of the ring and just kneels there while the other guys stomp on him. She argues with him and gets all upset (I'd get pissed, but that's me). Then the Student Council President says that it's only to be expected that she's a burden to him. Kei gets pissed (at hearing his own words?) breaks the handcuffs and stands up to declare that Hikari is strong and won't be beaten...by anyone but him. So suddenly, he lets her fight and they kick ass. But it's too late. They've already neutered her. She didn't get to stand up for herself. The same guy who is keeping her down is the one to suddenly defend her and it just stinks. I was not happy with how that turned out. I'll watch some more, but if this continues to be a common theme, I'm gonna drop this anime for sure.
Bus Gamer 2
I watched the second episode and it moved a little but I still don't see this thing going very far, let alone seeing anything resembling a satisfying resolution with one episode to go.
Kure-nai 2
There's still no explanation for what the heck is going on. The boy goes to school and is constantly calling home to check on the girl. There's some cutesy stuff as she explores her new world as it were and visits the public baths. Then we see the boy go out and beat the shit out of some adults on another mysterious job. So yeah, it was kinda cute but still holding tightly to its secrets so I still don't know what's going on. It looks like we're gonna get another cutesy episode next week with him taking her to school with him. I think this show is too tangled up in its own mysteries to really be as good as it thinks it is.
Now I'm going to take a break from all this anime and go read some manga. New chapter of FMA is out! Yay!
