It’s Fall, time for new anime! I’ve already watched a bunch. I’m going to have to split this thing up. So here’s the titles coming at you in part one:
- Iron Man, the Anime
- Bakuman
- MM!
- Star Driver Kagayaki No Takuto
- Otome Youkai Zakuro
- Shinrei Tantei Yakumo
- Samurai Girls
- Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai
- Yosuga No Sora
- Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

First up, Iron Man, the Anime. It's weird! So weird! You have the familiar character with a face that isn't Japanese at all, piercing blue eyes and a rather sharp nose and he's spouting out flawless Japanese. Since it's not in your typical anime style, it's odd to see all these people with sharper features than you usually see speaking in Japanese. I really wish that the American characters such as Tony and the test pilots from America actually spoke English. It would make it feel more real for me. But it's not really marketed to me is it?

The premise of the anime is that Tony is going to Japan to build a giant Arc Reactor station to fuel Japan. He's supposedly retiring from being Iron Man and a new blue and silver suit called the Iron Man Dio is being built. There are three different pilots that train in it and trade off using it. There are a few females, of course. A Japanese scientist helping Tony to build the Arc Reactor, a female reporter and there's a brief bit with Pepper.

There's a little tidbit with the scientist telling Tony to be more humble for the Japanese people to accept him. Instead, he puts on an air show and pilots the Dio. Only some weird light makes him crash. When a test pilot is testing out the Dio suit later on, he gets brainwashed by the light, kills the other test pilots and busts through the testing station, so it's Tony in the real Iron Man suit to the rescue. He kicks butt, but then some weird Alien-like critter appears and tells him it's from Zodiac and it's only the beginning. Tony blows it to smithereens, but by then, someone had made off with the Dio suit. And that's the introduction to Iron Man, the anime. It's not bad, nor is it that good, it's just really different.

Bakuman

It’s pretty obvious that this is from the same people who brought us Death Note. One of the main characters looks like Light with glasses. So it’s pretty. The story is off to an interesting start. Once upon a time there was a boy who loved manga. His favorite was the manga that his uncle drew. The boy also drew too, hoping to one day become a manga artist, but his uncle never encouraged him at it, despite the quality of his art. Then, his uncle died. They say he was overworked, but the boy believes he committed suicide and gives up on manga.

Now step forward in time and that boy has decided that he will be ordinary, always reaching only for ordinary things and never having any special dreams. He just wants to achieve mediocrity and be left alone. It’s rather depressing. He was sketching his crush on his notebook one day when the smartest kid in class, megane Light, notices. That kid later has a proposal for him, “Draw the manga that I’m going to write.”

The boy, Moritaka Mashiro, is not moved by his request at all but finally leaves saying he’ll think about it. Then the other kid, Akito Takagi, drags him over to his crush, Miho’s house and tells him that she’s a voice actress hopeful and that encourages the Moritaka to say that he’ll be a manga artist. Only then, he goes a wacky step further, encouraged by his favorite uncle’s failure to get the girl of his dreams, he asks his own dream girl to marry him if the manga he draws becomes an anime that she can be in! And oddly, she says yes, on a very lame condition, that they never see and speak to each other again. But they can send emails. What?

There are far better ways that our hero could have been convinced to draw a manga. I could have dealt with the wacky marriage proposal if not for the stupid condition. Still, I’ll give it another go to see if it’s going somewhere I want to follow.

MM!

From the basic premise alone, I wasn't going to watch this, but one reviewer mentioned that it had a twist. MM! is about Taro Sado, a masochist. He gets major sexual kicks from women abusing him. He says he hates it, but once a woman start shitting him or verbally abusing him, he goes all crazy. Still, he doesn't like that part of himself. There's a girl he likes and he wants to get rid of his masochism so he can get close to her. His best friend suggests that he visits the school's "Second Volunteer Club". It's that student organization. You know the one, where other students help you with your problems that seems pretty typical in Japanese schools. There's a girl there who beats the ever living crap out of him and he likes it.

As you can imagine, watching girls beat the shit out of this kid and him alternately being in pain or enjoying it and really getting off is not really that entertaining. But I kept watching for the twist and it was pretty easy to guess early on. As soon as Taro's best friend spoke, I thought "Is that really a boy? I think it's a girl hiding." Turns out I wasn't far off base. The girl that Taro has a crush on keeps coming to the convenience store where he works and running away. Then the violent chick from the Club asks him how he would treat a best friend with a secret. There's a happy feel good moment where he talks about acceptance and how his best friend accepted him despite him being a pervert. And then the reveal. The best friend isn't a woman, but he is a cross dresser. He's also voiced by a woman.

Anyway, the twist was cute. I liked the twist. I hated everything else. I doubt they'll follow through with Taro's crush so really any further reason to watch it is gone. I hate violent girl animes where they beat on some hapless guy, even if he likes it in this case. I might give the second episode a look, but really, I can't see anything good coming from this.

Star Driver Kagayaki No Takuto

This one is rather interesting. A blue haired guy and a girl are walking along the beach and he’s trying to tell her, she doesn’t have to be chained to him and she’s like “Don’t say that....I smell another guy!” She then runs down the beach where this red headed guy has just washed up on shore. She gives him mouth to mouth and that’s the beginning.

The red headed guy is Takuto and he missed the last ferry to Southern Cross Island. So he decided to swim to the island. Lucky for him Wako, the girl, and Sugata, the blue haired guy, were out for a walk. They take him back to Sugata’s big house (he seems to be rich and important) and he recovers. Takuto is quite vibrant. He’s there to start school on the island and goes on about singing out his youth.

Things are normal for a little bit with Takuto learning what class he’s in and settling into the dorms. Then there’s this secret organization and some stuff happens with a shrine maiden and some giant robots. Then Wako gets kidnapped as she is one of the island’s four shrine maidens. But Takuto happens to get in the way and gets himself kidnapped as well. Some stuff happens with the giant robots and the bad guys are transported to another dimension.

Only, Takuto follows them and summons forth a giant robot of his own. Everyone’s like “Oh shit! The Galactic Pretty Boy!” I laughed. It is hilariously awesome. I mean, giant robots and the guy who pilots the good robot is the “Galactic Pretty Boy.” It’s just so ridiculous, it has to be awesome. The Galactic Pretty Boy even has a transformation scene. “Dazzling the Stage! Galactic Pretty Boy!” Bwa ha ha ha! And his robot is pretty fabulous too. It seems to be based on 18th French noblemen. Its head looks like it’s wearing a feathered hat, it has arms that are wide at the top and then narrow like giant billowy sleeves and it has these odd appendages in the back that mimic the effect of a flowing jacket. XD Clearly, we have on our hands a very cracky giant robot show.

Oh, and it seems that the secret organization is composed almost entirely of the kids’ classmates, but they’re wearing masks so you can’t tell. But one of the guys just revealed himself. It should be interesting....if I can ignore their necks. They have some long necks. But other than that, it promises to be fun. I liked the ending sequence. It was all shots of Takuto, Wako and Sugata running around together. Very cute. All squishing into a phone booth in the rain, falling off rocks and causing a chain reaction that sends them all toppling into the water. I hope the show continues the vibe of the ending, cause it’s super cute. :D

Otome Youkai Zakuro

I'm not really sure what's going on here. There's something about a new Christian calendar being instituted and somehow it's gotten the spirits all riled up. Then there's some young soldiers that form a special Spirit Bureau with some cute little fox eared girls. Like I said, not really sure what's going on, but it's pretty. The strong spirited titular character, Zakuro, gets paired up with a guy that's actually scared shitless of spirits, but the opening and closing scenes make it pretty clear that they'll become a couple.

There's also a battle where the fox eared girls pull cherry blossom branches out of spirit companions, then start singing, which turns the branches into weapons. Zakuro stabbity stabs Raiju the lightening beast in the head and they all live happily ever after. Clearly, I don't quite have a hold of the story, but like I said, it's pretty. It has promise.

Otome Youkai Zakuro is streaming on Crunchyroll. (Well, only if you have a paid account, otherwise, you need to wait a week for the first episode.)

Shinrei Tantei Yakumo aka Psychic Detective Yakumo

I saw this one compared to Ghost Hunt, which I enjoyed, so I decided to watch it. It’s about a guy named Saitou Yakumo who has two different colored eyes (though you don’t find that out till later, he wears a contact lens) and can see ghosts and spirits with his red eye. He’s rumored to have psychic powers so a girl, Ozawa Haruka, comes to him for help. She and some friends broke into a supposedly haunted old school building and now suddenly they’re being possessed and committing suicide. After she realizes that he’s been using a mirror to win card guessing games for money, she decides he’s a fraud and goes to leave. But he tells her about her dead twin sister and then agrees to help her.

While there are some supernatural bits in this anime, the horror comes from a more human element. I won’t spoil it for you, but it wasn’t bad. The end leaves you with the feeling that something more will be going on, some organization of some sort is about to step onto the stage. The opening also promised more characters, so I’ll keep an eye out. If you want a pretty boy psychic detective that’s a bit aloof, here you go.

Samurai Girls

First impression, girls jumping around slicing airplanes in half...my suspension of disbelief isn’t ready for this yet! This anime is in some alternate universe where the Tokugawa Shogunate is still in power and obviously, you’re going to have the standard characters of that time like Yukimura Sanada and Hanzō Hattori thrown in, only, they’re girls.

They have this visual effect with ink, like ink blots, ink trails as though left by a brush. It’s all very interesting the first time they do it and then they keep doing it. Ink keeps dropping on the screen when it’s dramatic or there’s boobs. It gets annoying quickly. And there’s quite a bit of boobage.

I don’t know what’s going on with the plot. I don’t care. I felt rather detached from it really. The plot points kept being dropped by babbling girls and I do mean babbling. They’d just suddenly go off really fast and I didn’t really feel like keeping it straight. There’s a guy in a sea full of girls. Some naked chick falls out of the sky, calls him oniichan and then kisses him. Then there’s a time skip to three hours previous where he meets some naked girl and some ninja girls show up.

Even if you’re there for the clear hentai elements like the boobs or some yuri bit with a ninja girl going down on the queen or the student council president or whoever she’s supposed to be, you can’t really enjoy it because of the ink blots. I think overall I just have the feeling of “What did I just watch and why?”

Samura Girls is streaming on The Anime Newtork. I hear they give you a few shows for free but then charge for the rest. I’m not sure. I don’t know that I’ll bother coming back for more of that crack.

Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai aka My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute

I watched this one on Dark's recommendation. The story is about a regular average guy named Kyosuke. Looks like he has a pretty rough relationship with his little sister. She's an overachiever that gets a lot of attention and treats him like he's invisible. One day, they accidentally run into each other and something falls out of her purse. She runs off without noticing what she's left behind. Kyosuke picks up what appears to be a super fluffy magical girl anime and is rather shocked that his sister is a secret otaku. Only, upon closer inspection, the inside dvd is an R-rated game called "Let's Fall in Love with Little Sister." Now Kyosuke is really floored. He drops a few hints about his find at dinner to find out who owns the title, leading to his parents telling him not to be a creepy otaku. But his sister gets up and leaves the room really quickly.

Kyosuke pretends to go to the store, but when he notices his bedroom light go on, he sneaks back in and catches his sister digging around under his bed. This leads to a rather awkward confrontation in which she admits that she likes those sort of things. She proceeds to wake the poor guy up twice that night by slapping him and dragging him into her room, once to show off her erogame collection and then another time to force him to play an erogame. Needless to say, he's pretty weirded out by the fact that all of her games include big brother, little sister couplings. She also claims that it's gross that he's thinking about it, which just makes it all rather hilarious. He promised to accept her and not make fun of her hobbies, but clearly, she's about to drag him through her world. As long as they don't take a turn into a real brother, little sister pairing, I'm on for the ride. I hope it's hilarious.

Speaking of incest and erogames, Yosuga No Sora aka in solitude, where we are least alone is based off of one. There’s two pretty twins, a boy and a girl, no parents to be seen, they died, and a whole harem of girls. What a snore. The orphaned kids return to their dead grandfather’s house to start a new life. All the girls seem infatuated with the boy, including his sister. Oh look, they just had a chibi incest kiss. Bleh.

The twin sister’s body is “too weak to go to school”. Oh Japan. Why are your people so weak? The parents always die and all the kids get these near fatal fevers. It’s crazy. Anyway, this is a big mess of hentai crap. It ends with the sister dramatically asking the brother to make her come. Then the credits, then there’s a somewhat amusing chibi piece of some maid character that really loses its charm when she ends up masturbating on her bed and then crying cause she’s lonely. And man, I wish I was making this up. Then there’s yet another round of credits pounding home the fact that this is all based on an erogame. It should have stayed there. This is on my NEVER AGAIN list. Seriously, don’t bother. Unless you’re Kyosuke’s sister and you’re into that sort of thing....

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

This wants to be a Cartoon Network original show so bad. It’s like someone took the Powerpuff Girls, Ren and Stimpy, and Invader Zim and put them in a blender with some random perverted anime and then took a crap in it before blending it up and animating the resulting mess. It’s really a shame, for an anime, the art is different and catchy. They put a lot of effort into making it different, but they forgot one thing. To make it entertaining or funny. It’s just not funny. A fallen angel that’s a slut. Shit monsters. Visits to love hotels. An angel transformation sequence where they suddenly turn into typical anime girls and dance on stripper poles. It’s just not funny or fun or entertaining at all. The part I liked best was the end of it. The ending credits had some cute little animation and a nice ending song, but other than that, don’t waste your time.

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is streaming on Crunchyroll. (Well, only if you have a paid account, otherwise, you need to wait a week for the first episode.)

I think the Iron Man anime is being marketed to Iron Man fans, using the success of the new movies to attract the covetous manga fans. The ones that enjoyed the movie, that is. Marvel is constantly trying to combine comics and Japanese anime/manga. I have yet to see it actually work though. The sensibilities are pretty different and I think Marvel probably has final say on all creative endeavors. So they may be trying to find a balance that will attract anime/manga fans while not alienating the fans of the original (who usually don't care for the Japanese style). I'm actually surprised it's being aired in Japan before America really. I'd figure there would be a dual release or something, like the horrible Batman anime.

I'm glad you enjoyed the little sister anime. I have a feeling it's going to start sucking at some point. I never have a lot of hope for these kinds of animes. But for now it's really fun. I'm not sure if they're actually going to go for full blow incest relationship. Kyousuke seems pretty creeped out by the idea lol. I hope it doesn't go there either, I like my incest hinty. XD

Well, they should have tried harder. Having Tony speak in Japanese feels like a complete disconnect for me. The way they got him to Japan was handled pretty well and they had a few examples of his ego standing out in Japan. But the perfect Japanese just bugged me so much.

It was funny. I like that Kyosuke's so weirded out. I'm rather tired of sibling love stories or at least the way Japan portrays them in canon. It's like "I've never been so close to a living breathing boy before other than brother/cousin, therefore I am in love with brother/cousin." Uh huh.... And the next anime I watched just threw all that shit I hate right in my face. Ugh.

That's probably because the Japanese didn't feel like adding subs during the moments where Tony speaks english. Also do you really want to hear Tony's bad Engrish? XD

Marvel will probably release it dubbed. So then it will be less weird or weird in reverse. Hahah

They could have hired a native speaker, but I guess that's too hard. Ah well, not sure I'll even keep watching, so it's probably moot.
